Dear Mr. Sample:

How many times have you picked up your phone and made a long-distance call -- and then suddenly had the feeling you're talking too long.

But the truth is: you haven't been talking too long, you've simply been paying more than necessary for your long distance phone service.

Now American Express, through MCI, a major telecommunications company, is making available to Cardmembers a low-cost, long-distance phone service - low cost because it can save you 30 percent to 60 percent on your long distance phone calls within the MCI system.

We think many Cardmembers are perfect candidates for this innovative service because they are attuned to the times, and quick to take advantage of new technology, with an eye out for smart ways to tame inflation. Like the major corporations that place over 2 million calls a day through MCI, saving millions of dollars annually, our Cardmembers can now join the forerunners who have found a better way to cut the high cost of long-distance phone service.

Here's one example of the savings you can earn: your regular long-distance service costs you $2.45 for a 10 minute call from St. Louis to Atlanta.

But if you used this low-cost, long-distance phone service, you'd pay only $1.22 for the same 10-minute call.

The chart below illustrates the kind of savings you can expect:

How does this service work? It's very simple. Your long-distance phone calls will be carried from city to city on the coast-to-coast microwave transmission system of MCI. You merely call your local MCI number, and punch in your personal code number on a push button phone, before dialing the area code and the number you wish to call.

(If you don't already have a push-button phone, you can call your local phone company for easy installation. The savings on your first call will probably pay for the small extra monthly charge.)

You can choose between two different services, Full and Super Saver. The Full Service allows you to call long distance any time any day or night of the week. The Super Saver Service lets you call long distance during non business hours (between 5 p.m. and 8 a.m. Monday through Friday and all day Saturday and Sunday) and national holidays.

Now American Express is pleased to offer these two low-cost, long distance services to its Cardmembers -- with even bigger savings: equivalent to 20% off the normal MCI monthly service charges.

(over, please)
